MedAction Ireland
MedAction Ireland
What we’re about?
We believe there is an appetite among Irish doctors to contribute to the broader determinants of health.
We aim to use our position as witnesses to suffering, skilled communicators, experts on health and respected ‘honest brokers’ to create a fairer, better health system and society.
As doctors’ lives are busy, absorbing and draining we also aim to rekindle their sense of vocation, and rejuvenate their idealism.
We have been very active in organising conferences and education on the broader determinants of health.
This is the natural first step to achieving meaningful change.
We have recently launched two campaigns:
Fairer Access to Healthcare and
The Influence of the pharmaceutical industry on doctors
What’s Medaction Ireland?
In the early summer of 2003 three starry-eyed medical students conceived Medaction Ireland in the canteen of the Mater hospital. Back from a European student conference in Germany we were inspired by what groups of medical students in other countries were doing to highlight and change injustice in health and elsewhere
Taking a broad definition of health - complete physical social and spiritual wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease – we try and inform ourselves and others about the broader determinants of health.
And we do what we can to change these (for the better...)
Promoting a sense of vocation in medicine ...
and addressing social determinants of health.
Because there’s more to health than the absence of disease.
